Open to the public and blooming with excitement, you can enjoy a collection of local plant life specially preserved and cared for in Nacogdoches! The Pineywoods Native Plant Center is a part of the SFA Gardens which hosts many community and educational events.
“We were an unknown resource by everybody for 10 or 15 years because it was just me, and some students,” said Dr. David Creech, Director of the SFA Gardens. “In the spring the parking lots are full, we don’t have a charge, maps can show you where to go, we have information kiosks in all of our gardens. Having that many people come through here and appreciate the hard work of our students, and our staff, is really a joy after all these years.”
The Pineywoods Native Plant Center is 42-acres full of life and greenery that really shows off the uniqueness of East Texas. In April of 2000, Lady Bird Johnson visited the center for their dedication, and they are the third affiliated garden with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
“We have a perched wetland here, it’s always been wet,” said Creech. “Even though we’re about 35 feet above Lanana Creek Bottomland, we are an area that water can’t get away. It is a natural upland, wetland, which is kind of a contradiction in terms, but it’s true.”
You can walk through the 2-acre marsh across a new Trex boardwalk, along with 2.5 miles of of handicap accessible trails that go through the Tucker Woods. Next to the historic Tucker House, which is now the main office for the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, you can walk through the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Demonstration Garden that features 6 different native plant communities.
The Ina Brundrett Conservation Education building is where educational events, such as their free second Thursday lectures and programs for adults and students.
“We’re real proud of it, and it’s where all of our programming is,” said Creech. “We had 12,000 kids a year until 2020... it went to zero and we are now, here it is two years later, we are back. I’m real excited to say that our environmental education program for children is back.”
If you’re wanting to have some plants to add to your own home or garden, they have two plant sales (in April and October) where you can check out what has been growing in their nursery since 1986.
The Pineywoods Native Plant Center is located at 2900 Raguet St., Nacogdoches, TX 75965.
