A new tradition is building over in Longview, with the first ever Día de los Muertos festival and parade!
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a holiday that originated in Mexico and typically begins on November 1 and ends November 2. This holiday involves family and friends paying their respects and remembering those they have lost through joyful celebration, rather than mourning. Some traditions includes honoring the dead with calaveras and Aztec marigold flowers, known as cempasúchil, and building home altars, called ofrendas, where offerings such as photos of the dead, candles, alcohol, food, and sugar skulls are left for the dead.

The Día de los Muertos festival will kick off at Heritage Plaza in Longview, October 29th beginning at 4:00 PM. There will be food, performers, music, activities for kids, a Catrina contest at 5:00 PM, the parade at 6:00 PM, and an ofrenda contest at 8:00 PM. The event is completely free to the public! To be a part of the parade, you can learn more here.
