Comedy is making a new home in Tyler with the opening of The Understudy! A comedy club and event center, The Understudy opened in October 2022 as the premiere place to enjoy comedy and also learn a thing or two with the classes they’ll provide during the week. The comedy club will also serve as the official home of East Texas comedy group Card 53.

“I’ve seen the opportunities here with the other great standup comics that have come out of our city and are still performing here, to give them an opportunity to perform here as well,” said The Understudy owner and Card 53 member Steve Hargrave. “I noticed when I first came here that there are a lot of classes for youth, and there is an established community of actors, but there really aren’t those levels of entrance for adults and that’s what we’re going to try and start as well.”

Every weekend, you can expect to see stand-up comedy, improv, open mic nights, featuring comedians from all over the Texas area. During the week, The Understudy will be having classes, for subjects such as improv, stand-up, and sketch comedy, along with public speaking. These each meet over a 6-week period, with the comedy classes having a performance at the end (for your family and friends!).

“These classes are a great time, it’s a great place to meet people, it makes you a better public speaker, a better socialite, it sharpens your wit,” said Hargrave. “They are led by professional comedians that have doing these kinds of classes for a long time.”

The Understudy is located at 212 Old Grand Blvd., Suite C-102, in Tyler, TX.

The main show times are 6:00 PM on Fridays, and 7:00 & 9:00 on Saturdays. The doors open an hour before show time, and you are able to buy tickets online or at the door when you arrive.
