Getaway and make your stay at this local paradise

Enjoy fresh food, relaxing guest homes, and an adventure down dirt roads

Located inside the Davy Crockett Forest, you may not expect to find this hidden gem ready to give you a place to relax, fantastic food (especially on Sundays!), and the chance to explore Deep East Texas.

Larry Bruce Gardens, started by (you guessed it!) Larry Bruce and his wife Sara Bruce. It all started around 2008, and began with the Bruces learning to grow their own vegetable garden, with no large plans for what would ultimately become the full experience.

“It’s such a wonderful experience, we never dreamed, when we started all this, how many new friends and acquaintances we were gonna make,” said Larry. “It just blows our minds. It’s been quite a journey and it’s still not over with, we’re still going forward.”

Larry Bruce Gardens is most known for is its Sunday Buffet, which provides fresh home cooked style food, that seasonally uses what is grown right in the gardens on-site. Visitors come from all around, even from San Antonio, just to enjoy the buffet. The restaurant welcomes hundreds of people each week, and provides live music to truly set the mood and provide a fellowship atmosphere.

“My wife actually thought of this years ago, we were at a church in Houston,” said Larry. “She thought, ‘what a nice ministry it would be if everyone could stay after and have a lunch,’ it had been in here head for many many decades.”

Other than the Sunday fun, you can stay in multiple different houses, some on the Larry Bruce Gardens grounds and others at their Old Mill Village. These guest homes are available any time of the week, with food options with advanced notice, meaning you can enjoy some great food even when it isn’t quite time for the Sunday buffet. The properties are also on Airbnb and Vrbo.

For bigger parties, there is also The Retreat, a much larger space for events, vacation, and provides a private pond, a stocked kitchen, and a great escape from the busy city life.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, there is also a Back Road Jeep Rental Tour available, whether you’re staying the night or just visiting for the tour. This provides hours of excitement as you explore the Davy Crockett Forest and navigate your way through back roads and see many landmarks along the way. Also included is a picnic lunch while you’re out driving.

You can also take your own jeep for this excursions, by first contacting Larry Bruce Gardens to speak over the details.

When it came to escaping the city and relaxing out in nature, Larry said, “You might as well be 1,000 miles away when you stay the weekend or a few days. On clear nights, we’ve got some of the best star gazing available in this part of the world.”

The Sunday Buffet opens at Noon, and they ask you please arrive by 1:00 PM, the restaurant closes once everyone is gone. It costs $20 for adults, $10 for children 12 & under, and free for toddlers.

Larry Bruce Gardens is located at 3198 CR 4600 Kennard, TX 75847.
