From a fluke to a bustling venue, 1852 on Austin came to Jefferson with the plan to become THE high-end place to eat while also providing the perfect experience with live music each weekend in their music room.

Created by Dave Echols, Mickey Morrison, & Brenda Morrison opened 1852 on Austin in 2021 after over 40 years of having the idea and found the perfect location at what used to be the Planters Bank & Mercantile building in downtown Jefferson. The bank itself was build in 1852 and provides a perfect look into the history of Jefferson.

“The owner, David Echols, and I were interested in this music room and my wife Brenda, was the restaurant person,” said Mickey. “She does that and we do this and it just works.”

A large part of what brings the energy to 1852 on Austin, comes from their house band, The Sultans, that you can catch about every other week in the music room.

“We try to keep our repertoire varied and we don’t we don’t play the same type of music,” said Bill Blankenship. “We basically work on 60s, 70s, & 80s rock, rhythm and blues, and 90s country.”

Name after the Dire Straits song “Sultans of Swing”, The Sultans of 1852 are made up of Bill Blankenship, Bobby Langston, Marcus Matthews, & Jim O’Brien, who have been playing together since 1999. Each of the members are veteran road musicians who have played all around the world. A perk of being the house band at a restaurant owned by musicians, Mickey Morrison routinely joins the band to play (and trying to get Dave Echols to join them on stage too!).

“They filled in for us a couple of times when we had an emergency and the band canceled and [The Sultans] came right in and played, by golly,” said Mickey. “The next night we had another cancellation and they came back the next night and we decided, you know, let’s talk to them and see if you want to be the house band.”

What can beat out fantastic food partnered with live local music? I’ll give you a hint, it’s not much.
