Known as the first great American playwright, Eugene Gladstone O’Neill was an American playwright who won the 1936 Nobel Prize in Literature “for the power, honesty and deep-felt emotions of his dramatic works, which embody an original concept of tragedy.” More than any other dramatist, O’Neill introduced American drama to the dramatic realism pioneered by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, and Swedish playwright August Strindberg, and was the first to use true American vernacular in his speeches.

Angelina College invites the community to celebrate and honor Dunbar, remembering brilliance at this two day event.
First Black Families

The program will recognize the first African American families of Tyler and Smith County through a series of presentations. The East Texas Genealogical Society will honor the descendants of early trailblazers from 1846 through 1855. The research on these families was conducted by Dorothy Franks, Founder of the Texas Slaves History and Inventory Preservation Project and Councilwoman Dr. Shirley McKellar.
Flights & Bites: Mardi Gras Edition

The Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform works by Mike Tamaro, Sammy Nestico, Alan Baylock and other jazz legends when the ensembles take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
The Swingin’ Axes will perform “Rivers” by Mike Tamaro, “Us” by Thad Jones,“JEN-TEN” by Greg Yasinitsky, and “But Beautiful” by Lennie Niehaus. The Swingin’ Aces will perform “Dindi” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, “Things Are Getting Better” by Julian Adderly, “Swampwater Blues” by Les Hooper, “Two Seconds to Midnight” by Alan Baylock, and “Tribute to the Count” by Sammy Nestico.

Mr. Bougie, who conducted the New York premiere of his Requiem at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage in March 2022, will be sharing his original composition in Tyler at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
With solo soprano Candace Taylor, solo baritone Thomas Irwin, and pianist Mary Scott Smith.
Pineywoods Camerata Concert

The Pineywoods Camerata at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform Baroque music from Germany and Italy when faculty members and students present a recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.
The Pineywoods Camerata is a string faculty-led, conductorless ensemble dedicated to performing Baroque works with an informed stylistic approach. New faculty member Pablo Moreno Holguin, oboe, will be featured as a soloist on Alessandro Marcello’s Concerto in C minor, one of the best known works of the period for oboe. The concert also features Dr. Minhae Lee, harpsichord, and SFA string students.
