Where History & Nature Connect

Mission Tejas State Park Grapeland, TX

Within the big thicket of deep East Texas lies a state park that is rich in the heritage of those that settled in Texas for hundreds of years, as well as the surrounding natural environment. The Mission Tejas State Park, located in Grapeland, is a perfect weekend oasis for locals and travelers alike.

STORIES TO TELL

As you transverse around the park, you will find a plentiful amount of historical significance. Established in the center of the park is a commemorative mission, or a chapel as we might describe it today, that represents the original Spanish Mission San Francisco de los Tejas. This beautiful structure gives guests a view of what everyday life may have looked like for Spanish missionaries back in the late 1600′s.

Just down the way, you can walk a portion of the El Camino Real! This ancient 2,500-mile highway connected Guerrero, Mexico to Louisiana in the 17th century. Caravans delivering goods would use this route, making stops at various forts and settlements along the way. Many travelers would walk this road in hopes of making a new life. Today, the El Camino Real is broken apart. But with special places like Mission Tejas State Park, you can walk its remnants.

Near the entrance, check out the Rice Log Home. This intact 1800′s log cabin was home to the Rice Family and served as somewhat of a hotel along the El Camino Real. Examine the interestingly shaped rooms as well as various tools that were used back then.

There is just so much history to enjoy here at the park! Stop by the interpretive center to learn more about the area and the people that cultivated these lands. There are tons of interactive exhibits inside that you and your family will love, like the El Camino Real Game of Chance. It’s sort of similar to The Oregon Trail game.

SEE WHAT THEY SAW

As you fill up your brain with all of the rich history of those that called this area home, it’s time to hit the trails! There are over 10 miles worth of hiking trails with varying degrees of difficulty. You will be surprised by the amount of elevation some of the trails have. Which makes for a really fun experience. If you decided to take the Olen Matchett Trail or Steep Step Trail, both will lead you to a mysterious “bathtub” rock structure. Be sure to ask a ranger about this intriguing oddity to learn more about its origins.

There are fun fishing opportunities here at the park too. Since the pond here is relatively quaint compared to other state parks, it means that there are no loud commotions from boats or other crafts. This allows for some peace and quiet as you enjoy the park. Camp in solitude underneath the pines, oaks, and hardwoods.

Mission Tejas State Park is a treasure of Deep East Texas. Experience life as people did here 400yrs ago. Get off the grid this weekend and enjoy all this park has to offer.
