Though it is not too far from Downtown Athens, the East Texas Arboretum creates a serene atmosphere with its amazing showcase of the natural environment, as well as the land’s rich history. Take an family day-trip or solo stroll through this wonderful oasis that highlights the local fauna and historical significance of the region.
A WINDOW TO THE PAST
What makes this green space so special is their intentional preservation of the history of East Texas. As you mosey about, you are bound to find a tool or piece of furniture that reveals a lot of what life was like centuries ago.
The most prominent structure on the grounds is the Wofford House. This East Texas home was constructed in 1850 and is in incredible condition. By signing up for a tour, you can walk into the very rooms where the Wofford family did life so long ago.
A couple of the other exhibits that tell many interesting stories of old include:
The Henderson County Jail Cell. Place yourself in this giant metal box and reflect on the seriousness of justice.

ADMIRE ITS BEAUTY
With over 104 acres to explore, there are many ways you can take-in the natural environment here.
Take a hike through the lush forest with two-miles of trails. There are helpful markers throughout to help you identify many of the native plants in the area. As you make your way to the bog-area, you can view a wonderful spectacle. The Yellow Pitcher Plant!
If trekking through the woods isn’t your thing, you can enjoy the delicately designed gardens that the arboretum has to offer. You will be amazed by the wonderful variety of vibrant flowers.
For those that are just buzzing with excitement, stop by the Beehive & Wildlife Pond! Here you can take a peek at 60,000 at work creating some of that delicious East Texas honey.

The strong diversity of the park allows for many opportunities to learn and enjoy all facets of East Texas life. There is something for everybody!
One way The East Texas Arboretum has cultivated this identity is with the building of their Henderson County Veterans Memorial and Plaza. This beautiful structure honors the sacrifice of Henderson County veterans who have served the U.S. Military dating back to the 1800′s! Sit awhile and read through the names of these amazing heroes.
