Witness the Wonders of East Texas Timber

Texas Forestry Museum Lufkin, TX

Since the late 1800′s, the trees that blanket the East Texas terrain have been harvested and repurposed to create the majority of local townships that we are familiar with today. The Texas Forestry Museum, in Lufkin, preserves the tools, methods, and most importantly, the personal stories that made this monumental endeavor possible. Experience the rich history showcased here and have an absolute blast while doing so, with a variety of games and activities that the whole family will love!

A CHANGING LANDSCAPE

The Texas Forestry Museum offers a wide range of artifacts that served a crucial purpose to the collection of timber during its heyday.

As you walk throughout the History Wing, study the archaic machinery that cut, transported, and processed tons of sturdy wood. The museum even has a functional 1900′s steam engine. Ask an employee and they will power it up for you!

There are even more magnificent pieces outside of the museum! Explore Outdoor Train Exhibit, that presents a 1908 Baldwin locomotive. This powerhouse of a train was vital in the transportation of freshly harvested timber.

The collection of machines and tools on display are very impressive. However, what is more impactful is how the Texas Forestry Museum highlights the every day lives of those who would have worked and lived during this sawmill boom era. Visit the Sawmill Town exhibit and witness daily life of those living in the so-called “front camps.”
