Jacksonville Tomato Sculptures
If you’ve ever passed through the city of Jacksonville, you have probably seen the many iconic vegetable sculptures outside of homes and businesses.
These painted concrete tomatoes symbolize the long-lasting pride that the city has in this prized crop. Local farmers back in the 1930’s relied heavily on tomatoes, as they grew well in the East Texas soil. This in turn boomed the local economy, helping pave the way to what the wonderful city of Jacksonville is today.
As we were exploring downtown recently, we easily counted 75 of these creative veggies. Each one with a special design, representing a local business or remembering a special community group.
It really is so fun going street to street, seeing what unique tomatoes you might find! Next time you’re in Jacksonville, play a game of “Find the Tomato!”
