The Killough Monument & Cemetery
For Texas History enthusiasts that are traveling near Jacksonville and Bullard, the historical marker highlighting the infamous Killough Massacre is a must see.
As you travel down the lonesome county road that brings you to the Killough Monument & Cemetery, you will quickly notice the large stone obelisk that points high to the sky.
This structure, as well as the many burial sites and somber gravestones, reveal the tragedy that took place on October 5th, 1838.

18 pioneers, most of which included the Killough family who were settling in the area, were killed or captured by 8 horseback riders. The culprits of the murderous group has long been debated. Whether be from a local Native American tribe or some bandit group.
This terrible event is known as “the largest single Indian depredation in East Texas.” The official city of Jacksonville’s website has a detailed telling of the story. Which you can find HERE!
The Killough Monument & Cemetery is located at: County Road 4402, Bullard, TX 75757
