Experience the World-Wide Impact of Northeast Texas

Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum Pittsburg, TX

Pittsburg, TX is home to many world-renowned entrepreneurs, inventors and a truly powerful sense of community.

The Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum, located in downtown, tells the many stories of those who influenced this beautiful portion of the state, and beyond!

FIRST IN THE SKIES

Most everyone has heard of the famous flight of the Wright Brothers’ Kittyhawk in 1903.

But how about the wonderous Ezekiel Airship?

According to various eyewitness accounts, many of which the museum has preserved, this original aircraft took flight one year prior to the Kittyhawk!

Step inside the Airship Room and behold a 1/3rd sized replica of this magnificent flying machine.

Along the walls read many stories of the flight, as well as information on the inventor, Reverend Burrell Cannon. Whose inspiration came from the Bible!

FAST TRAINS. FASTER CARS.

Aircraft isn’t the only mode of transportation that the museum showcases.

As you visit the Depot Museum portion, get a firsthand glimpse of just how important the Pittsburg railroad was and is today. From photographs and equipment to a fully functional telegraphy booth, the museum displays the revolutionary impact that its train station had for this area of East Texas. Outside they even have a well-preserved Kansas City Southern caboose to explore!

Next door, learn the story of local celebrity Carroll Shelby and his Shelby Cobra Mustang GT 350! (You may be familiar with the recent movie Ford v Ferrari. Where Carroll Shelby is portrayed by Matt Damon!) This legendary automotive designer and racecar driver grew up near Pittsburg, considering it his second home. The museum has an incredible display of his story and accolades, plus Carroll’s own Shelby Cobra Mustang GT 350. They even have a second Shelby Mustang display that is on rotation, which means every 6 months you can come in and see a brand-new Shelby here at the museum!
