Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge
East Texas is home to a huge variety of ecosystems.
One region that tends to draw folks from all across the world is the bottomland hardwood forest surrounding Caddo Lake.
Back on October 19th, 2000, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved 8,500 acres of the area, which happened to be home to the historic, now abandoned Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant, to host the Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge.
These now public lands offer tons of FREE outdoor fun.
The Auto-Tour is a perfect way to see a good amount of the refuge in a short-ish amount of time. Transverse through the pines with educational signage that explain events and facts about the area.

On your way in or out, be sure to stop by the self-serve Visitor Center for a very informative and interactive mini museum. There are many displays inside that showcase the incredible flora and fauna in the region. One table even has animal skulls, turtle shells and other items from nature with a sign that reads, “Please Touch.”
Guests can hike the scenic trails, capture unique wildlife through the lens of your camera, and even participate in some exciting hunting opportunities.
If you are looking for more outdoor fun in the area, you have to visit the iconic Caddo Lake State Park with its world-renowned Spanish Moss.
The Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge’s hours are seven days a week, sunrise to sunset. So, you have plenty of opportunity for a fun visit.
