New London Cenotaph
If you are traveling on State Highway 42, near Overton, you are bound to witness the 37ft marble obelisk that splits the road in two.
This incredible structure is none other than the New London Cenotaph. A memorial for the lives lost in the 1937 New London School explosion.

As you make your way up the beautifully carved-out stairs, you will notice hundreds of names engraved into the sides of the monument. These are in honor of the victims of this East Texas tragedy.
Lift you gaze to the top of the cenotaph to see a magnificent granite block depicting children offering gifts and homework to their teachers.

As you spend some time here, you will quickly notice the powerful sense of community that New London had back then, as well as today.
This historic blast did not destroy this town. Rather, the locals came together as a family to rebuild, remember and persevere in unity.
