If you mention Camp Tyler to folks around East Texas, chances are you’ll get a response of, “Hey, that’s where I caught my first fish!” or “My friends and I learned how to build a campfire there!”
For 80 years now, this local nonprofit organization has been a home within the pines for discovery, learning and fun!
Schools, clubs and other youth groups have been making life long memories here for generations, all while growing important skills and knowledge.
THE PROCESS OF DISCOVERY
Through the wonder of the local ecosystem and the influential culture of East Texas history, campers can hone the skills needed to become critical thinkers and future impactful citizens. Below are a few of Camp Tyler’s transformational programs:
- Texas Village - Travel back to the 1800’s! Campers will get to experience many of the everyday tasks and crafts of the pioneer life. From wood working and candle making to educational story telling in the one-room schoolhouse, students will experience lots a wide variety of impactful activities.
- Pond Study - Learn the scientific process and get a little dirty! Campers will get to investigate one of many camp ponds, seeing what lifeforms inhabit this watery space. Collect tiny invertebrates, view them through the microscope and finally draw conclusions on the health of the pond.
- Survivor Scenario - Do you have what it takes to survive the East Texas wildness? Campers will get the chance to develop life saving skills such as orienteering, how to start a campfire and shelter building. Each practice helps solidify understanding of the 5 Basic Needs: water, food, shelter, warmth and safety.
