The East Texas Weekend Preview — Over 300yrs ago, East Texas was bustling with international foot traffic, faithful Spanish friars and ancient Native American dwellings.

One specific melting pot of coexistence between a vast variety of cultures existed in present day San Augustine, known as Mission Dolores.

This Spanish-developed community was constructed in 1721, with the goals of ministering to the local Ais Native American group and helping solidify national boundaries between it and the neighboring French on the other side of the Sabine River.

Although the actual structure of the mission has been lost to time, artifacts and stories of the folks that inhabited this home can be enjoyed at the Mission Dolores State Historic Site.

Located right outside downtown, this museum offers an incredible window into the lives of those that worked, preached and traded here. Discover all sorts of rescued items like beautifully preserved pottery, precious trinkets, and various weaponry.

We absolutely loved getting to deep dive into the daily life and companionship of the many different people groups who lived here, centuries ago.

Outside you can walk the historic grounds of where the mission stood, which is loaded with informative plaques that tell of the community’s significance. Guests can even enjoy a fun disk golf course and RV camping located right here on the property.

This weekend, embark on a educational, and exciting, journey to this ancient gathering place.

The Mission Dolores State Historic Site can be found at: 701 S Broadway St, San Augustine, TX 75972
