Grave of Karen Silkwood
The East Texas Weekend Preview — In 1983, a star-studded cast, by the likes of Meryl Streep and Cher, portrayed the fascinating life of East Texan lab technician, Karen Gay Silkwood.
The film, Silkwood, brought worldwide attention to Karen’s efforts to alert the nation of the highly dangerous malpractice of the Kerr-McGee plant, which produced various nuclear contents from plutonium.
Together with the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers Union, Karen would gather huge amount of criminalizing evidence that would plainly show the plant’s mishandling and intentional disregard for employee safety.
Unfortunately in November of 1974, a mysterious single-vehicle car crash led to the death of Karen Silkwood. Even this very day, the cause of this tragic event is questioned of whether or not an outside group was involved...
Her mission and heralding would not fall by the wayside as it would later influence a stronger, more careful operation in how similar plants would handle hazardous material.

Today, you can visit, and pay respect, to her gravesite on the outskirts of Kilgore, TX. (Karen, herself, being born in Longview in 1946.)
Despite the mystery of her death and the impactful legacy she left in the nuclear energy world, she shall be remembered by her two most important qualities; a loving daughter and mother.
The grave of Karen Silkwood can be found at the Danville Cemetery, nearby Danville United Methodist Church: 2187 Danville Rd, Kilgore, TX 75662
