Old Hughes Furnace
The East Texas Weekend Preview — In the 1860’s, the Civil War was running rampant throughout the South.
In order to supply Confederate troops with iron-based items, such as weaponry and tools, the Old Hughes Furnace would crank out around one ton of pig iron per day.
Today, you can check out a replica of this mega-sized oven, with many of the original bricks still in tact, right outside the U.S. Steel plant in Lone Star, TX.
Aside from this destination’s rich history, the furnace is massive and fun to check out!
This giant cylinder of old bricks gives you a real perspective of how just how much iron was being produced each day, as well as how big the flames and smoke clouds would have been.

There also many holes that you can peek through and see your friends on the other side. :)
