Family Life in 1800’s East Texas

John Wingate Truitt Log Cabin

The East Texas Weekend Preview — In 1840, John & Elizabeth Truitt constructed their family home on the outskirts of present day Daingerfield.

Nestled deep into the piney woods, this newly established East Texas homestead would gradually develop into a stunning living space that has been incredibly preserved to this very day.

Open daily, dawn to dusk, the Truitt family invites you to explore all that this homestead has to offer.

The first thing you will notice is the massive awning that covers the entirety of the house! An impressive, ingenious method to keeping this historic home in tact over the generations.

Walk up the creaky, yet pristine, stairs and step inside to witness time frozen still from the 1800’s. Plates organized for dinner time, the family piano primed to play and even a special surprise in the eastside bedroom. (It gave us a nice scare, haha.)

Outside the log cabin, there are tons of farming equipment and structures to check out. One fun, interactive piece is the massive bell attached to the side of the cabin. With it’s long rope, visitors are encouraged to give it a ring. What’s super neat is that there is a chart nearby that shows what each patterns of “rings” correlates to. One rhythm was to call one one of the Truitt boys, another speed was to announce lunchtime.

Throughout the entire complex, guests can gather a sense of what life was like pioneering here in the East Texas. We absolutely loved our visit and we know you will too! Mark this spot on your map as you explore local destinations this weekend!
