The East Texas Weekend Preview — Tucked away in the Caddo Lake thicket resides a truly remarkable restaurant that has been feeding families and cultivating community for generations.
Since its 1930’s origin, the Big Pines Lodge has provided joyful memories and happy bellies to East Texans and travelers alike with their diverse offerings.
To give you a glimpse of what the Big Pines Lodge was like back in the day, here is a quote (that we absolutely love) from Johnny Winn, “This was the only place in the state of Texas that you could have a catfish dinner, a mug of beer, buy guns and ammo and still pay out at the same cash register.”
Although they no longer sell weaponry, you can still order some of the freshest fish and fried hushpuppies this side of the Mississippi. During our visit, we absolutely chowed down for lunch by ordering their BPL Plate. A perfect trifecta of fried catfish, chicken and shrimp. The fried alligator and their many steak and burger entrees are a must-try too!
What makes this destination so special is its scenic location right along the Big Cypress Bayou. (One of many connecting waterways of Caddo Lake.) With a massive wooden dock near their outdoor seating, we watched as many folks arrived for lunch by boat and kayak!

This weekend, admire the glistening of the Caddo Lake water and the swaying of the droopy Spanish moss high up on the bald cypress trees all while you enjoy an unforgettable meal.
