The East Texas Weekend Preview — Embrace your inner paleontologist this weekend.
Trek the beautiful Sulphur River in the northern portion of East Texas and hunt for REAL FOSSILS!
For thousands of years, many ancient creatures native to the area have been fossilized within the terrain. By the changing flow of the river, many of these well preserved relics make there way to the surface.
Grab your rubber boots, pack a little hand shovel and get ready to explore! Many portions of the river are low enough to easily stroll and scan for fossils, as well as other interesting finds.
During our time on the Sulphur River, we found a variety of interesting treasures. First up was the Exogyra Ponderosa, also known as “Devil’s Toenail.” This ancient oyster frequented the area long ago. This one of the most common fossils to find on the river. Another interested piece was the rock-solid gastropod. Once again, this little snail commonly made its home in the area.

We were so pleased with our findings. Yet, some explorers are findings really awesome stuff, like Native American arrowheads and actual fossilized shark teeth!
The Sulphur River is quite expansive, with many spots to begin your hunt. We settled on the river entrance in Ben Franklin, TX, below the 39 Bridge.
Here are a couple of notes to keep in mind if you decide to go hunting this weekend:
- Always respect your surrounds and the environment.
- Do not trespass onto/through private property.
- Know your physical abilities. Some river entrances and portions can prove to be challenging, such as very muddy terrain and tall slopes. Explore within your capabilities.
This was by far one of the coolest experiences in all of East Texas!
