The East Texas Weekend Preview — Following the ending of the Civil War, many U.S. citizens faced uncertainty as their local economies and ways of life had been completely shaken up.

This was especially true for those living in East Texas.

In an attempt to heal communities, the Texas state government placed responsibility for every county to provide a means to help folks get back on their feet.

For Kaufman County, this came by the way of the establishment of a “poor farm,” a designated acreage of land were suffering citizens could live and work.

Today, you can actually visit this historic place of refuge! Discover the many well-preserved structures and farming equipment that helped East Texans rebuild a new way of life.

During your visit, stroll along the path that will take you right to fascinating relics like the old, buried cellar and towering dormitory. Towards the back of the complex, check out the commissary building. Inside of the left room you will find a stunning, wall-to-wall mural painted by an inmate at the time.

Out in the field, witness a massive collection of old tools and hardware that made the farm run. Not only did this site help boost the local economy, but it also gave East Texans the means to leave the “poor farm” with enough money to start a new life, Post-Civil War.

This weekend, peer through a window of local history at this incredible destination.
