Historic Schoolhouse in the Piney Woods

Concord Rosenwald School Mount Enterprise, TX

Concord Rosenwald School

The East Texas Weekend Preview — Just over a century ago, a massively impactful schoolhouse was constructed among the pines near present day Mount Enterprise.

Following its construction in 1925, the Concord Rosenwald School became the only operational education center for Black students within this portion of East Texas.

The school conducted classes for the local youth for almost 50yrs before it’s closing in 1971, following the newly established integration measures state-wide.

Today, this old schoolhouse still stands! In a collaborative work between the Concord High School Alumni Association and Preservation Texas’s Rural African American Heritage Grants Program, efforts are being made to bring the school back to its former glory.

Although its current state is a work-in-progress, you are still able to visit and stroll around the schoolgrounds.
