The East Texas Weekend Preview — 1943 was a pivotal year for the Allied Forces during world War II.

The Axis surrender in North Africa, the Allied invasion of Sicily and the taking of the Guadalcanal.

While these victories were won across the planet, a portion of the manpower was cultivated right here in East Texas. In March of 1943, Camp Fannin opened its doors in Tyler. Serving as a U.S. Army Infantry Replacement Training Center, this 14,000 acre space prepared local soldiers in many tactics of war. All of which helped turn the tides in many engagements that the U.S. forces encountered.

In the later years of the World War II, this space also served as a P.O.W. base camp for thousands of captured German soldiers. One of many such sites around East Texas.

Today, in honor of all of those who contributed their efforts and lives to the mission of Camp Fannin, you can visit this beautiful memorial site on the outskirts of Tyler.
