Giant Lawn Chair

Ab's Chair Nacogdoches, TX

Ab’s Chair

The East Texas Weekend Preview — Tucked away within a tiny meadow, along the Banita Creek Trail, lies a absolutely huge folding chair!

This 8ft tall, metal sculpture serves a memorial for a beloved Nacogdoches local who served the community and natural environment with great passion.

While serving as a professor at SFA, Ab Abernathy was widely known for his efforts in developing the Lanana and Banita Creek Trail within the city.

It would be common to see him down by the creek, clearing brush and shaping an enjoyable pathway for folks to trek. Ab famously would break out his lawn chair, relax among the pines and admire the scenery.

After his passing, local artist Jeff Brewer created this massive sculpture in his honor to be placed at what is known as, Ab’s Park.

Today, the giant lawn chair still stands proud, welcoming guests for a unique sit and a great photo op. This small portion of the Banita Creek Trail is dedicated to him including a few park benches and a beautiful plague telling his story.

Add a visit to Ab’s Park to your weekend itinerary in the oldest city in Texas!

Ab’s Chair can be found along the Banita Creek Trail, near the Lofts Nacogdoches on Pearl Street.
