The Hill that Predates Nacogdoches

Ancient Mound Nacogdoches, TX

Ancient Mound

The East Texas Weekend Preview — While Nacogdoches is the oldest city in Texas, the piney woods have been home to various people groups thousands of years prior.

The Caddo, and other Native American tribes, have called East Texas home for millennia. Here they settled, cultivated and enjoyed every day life around the region.

One common practice among local tribes was the creation of “mounds.” These hill-like structures were used for a variety of purposes, including ceremonial spaces and tomb like burials.

Today, there are a handful of these mounds still in tact. One of which still stands in downtown Nacogdoches.

Take a stroll down Mound Street and discover this fascinating knoll. According to local historians, the area was once filled with these ancient mounds, which contained many items such as pottery.

Though the mound is somewhat small, the historical significance is absolutely massive!

After you visit this one, we strongly recommend you visit the Caddo Mounds State Historical Site in Alto! This East Texas park is home to towering mounds totally preserved from thousands of years ago.
