The Unknown Soldier

The Unknown Soldier Gilmer, TX

Morris Cemetery

The East Texas Weekend Preview — Tucked away in the piney woods lies a gravesite with a somber, fascinating mystery.

Over a century before the plot’s historical marker was placed, the Confederate soldier buried below was active in the Civil War before catching a deadly illness.

We believe the plaque placed here tells the story best:

“In this grave, the first in Morris Cemetery, lies a Confederate soldier. On his way home at the end of the war, and very ill, he stopped at the William Morris home, near here. There he died, without revealing his name.”

While the narrative is brief, with so many unanswered questions, we can gather a couple of things. One, we can appreciate the compassion of Morris family for opening their doors to this suffering man. Two, we can admire that desire to go home after a hard fault battle.

Located beside “The Unknown Solider” are a handful of other unknown soldiers that have been laid to rest. Although, they may be considered even more mysterious as there are no historical markers beside their headstones.

This weekend, as you explore the wonderful community of Gilmer, pop into this peaceful cemetery to honor and pay respects to fallen soldiers of the past.

The Morris Cemetery can be found near the intersection of Suffolk Road and Aspen Trail in Gilmer.

The Unknown Soldier’s gravesite can be found in the Southwest corner of the cemetery.
