Ladonia Fossil Park
The East Texas Weekend Preview — In 2025, we learned about the wonderous fossil hunting adventures that East Texans, and out-of-state travelers, were enjoying along the Sulphur River. We decided to take a trip and were instantly hooked on the hobby.
This year, the city of Ladonia reopened their beloved fossil park, allowing for a clear, easy way for folks to enter the river and embark on their hunt. So naturally, we had to make another visit to this ancient East Texas waterway!
Guests of all ages can trek miles of the Sulphur River, in hopes of finding precious, old relics from Texas’ past.
Arrowheads, shark teeth and rock-solid plants are just a few of the special findings that are tucked away in the river bed. During our visit we found lots of pieces of baculites! These very, very old cephalopods were long and slender, waving along the floors of waterways.
We also found a few teeth from a variety of ancient Texas fish! Upon identification, one is from a Protosphyraena (swordfish) and the other is a Enchodus (smaller, ray-finned fish) tooth!

While the river itself can be very muddy, the water usually stays fairly low. Thus, making this activity a great idea for the whole family! During our visit, there were a handful of groups exploring and digging for treasures.
The fossil park is free to visit. Plus! Any fossils you find are free for the taking. Just be sure to respect the wildlife and abide by the official rules.
What are you waiting for? Get out there and experience the thrill of the hunt!
The Ladonia Fossil Park can be found at: 2242 FM 904, Ladonia, Texas 75449
If you want to make your visit a true weekend experience, book a stay at Cooper Lake State Park and make some great stops around Sulphur Springs!
