Home to a massive variety of spectacular flowers and animals, the Watson Rare Native Plant Preserve welcomes you to come and admire the wonders of Deep East Texas.
Stroll the sturdy land bridges that take you on an unforgettable journey through the forest. As you explore you will find the likes of intricate Orchids, booming ferns, and many other stunning native plants.
By far the most fascinating piece of nature here are the various carnivorous plants that follow along the walking trail. While they bloom mostly in the springtime, throughout the majority of the year you can admire the intriguing pitcher plants! Looking like literal water pitchers, this amazing flora invites curious insects with their sweet nectar right before they slip and begin to be digested. It’s a sight to behold for any nature enthusiast. The preserve is home to four out of the five carnivorous plants in the United States.
As you trek through the woods, atop very clean trails, you are bound to encounter the sights and sounds of the many birds and bugs that inhabit this region. The flocking of ducks, zooming dragonflies that’re the size of your hand and many lake-soaked amphibians can be seen going about their daily lives.

This wonderous, protected piece of Deep East Texas began by the passions of the late Geraldine Ellis Watson. Known for being an author, artist and nature activist, Watson adored the Lake Hyatt area of Warren, TX. In 2009, she made way for the Watson Rare Native Plant Preserve to become a nonprofit organization, ensuring a future for locals, and travelers, to come and enjoy at absolutely no cost.
