Following nationwide emancipation in 1865, the East Texas community of Center Point was formed by freedmen families that began settling in the area.

In the next few decades, the settlement would official become known as Center Point, TX.

While the setting was quite rural, citizens would have a local church, community center and schoolhouse constructed prior to the turn of the century.

Today, all that stands is this original school.

From the roadside, you can admire this rather large building that once housed many joyful students and passionate teachers. According to the Texas State Historical Association, the Center Point School was recognized as one the best schools in Camp County with it’s high-level instructors and 200+ budding kiddos.

Following the events of the Great Depression, the school’s attendance rates would begin to plummet. By 1955, the district would then combine with Pittsburg ISD.

While the schoolhouse is now empty, you can still visit and admire a true milestone in education for Black Americans in East Texas.

The Center Point School can be found at the corner of FM 2057 and CR 4247 in Pittsburg, TX.
