Burch-Cauble House
The East Texas Weekend Preview — Right before Texas won its independence, the walls of this local home were going up.
In the 1830’s, a pioneer by the name of Peter Cauble brought his family to Texas in hopes of a new life and fortune.
While still under Mexican rule, the Cauble family farmed this area of what is now known as Tyler county. Their hewn-log home would be established in 1835. (One year before Texas secured victory in the the Texas Revolution.)
Peter Cauble served in the war, receiving acres upon acres of land for his duty. Later he would later go on make the massive Peach Tree Plantation.
Following his passing, Valentin Burch, Cauble’s son-in-law and a Battle of San Jacinto veteran, would take ownership of the home. Hence the name Burch-Cauble House.

Today, the home still stands and is available to visit. Walk up the historic steps, peer inside the many windows and imagine a life in the early days of Texas. (The home is normally an open, self-guided tour experience. However, the doors were locked when we arrived. If you do plan to visit and want to go inside, try contacting the Tyler County Historical Commission.)
What’s even more fascinating, about one hundred yards away are the actual grave sites of Peter Cauble and Valentine Burch. Visit the nearby, tiny cemetery of the family that once called this spot home. What’s super cool is that beside a few of the graves are seals that state, “Citizen of the Republic of Texas.”
