Wood County Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

The East Texas Weekend Preview — With a name like Wood County, you just know that their nature reserve is going to be a good one.

And wow is it ever!

The Wood County Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is an underrated treasure here in East Texas, being home to a plethora of stunning flowers, towering pines and various little critters making their home among the plants.

As soon as you step foot inside, you are enveloped by a curtain of massive trees. Whichever direction you pick to explore first you are abound to find many wonders.

The botanical gardens are filled to the brim with flowers of all shapes, colors and sizes. We had a blast strolling from each group of plants, admiring tons of the native species that thrive here. The gardens are also a certified Monarch Waystation, meaning you are bound to see fluttering butterflies making a pitstop during their migrating seasons.

Towards the center of the area, you can’t miss the massive 1905 Pony Truss Bridge. Also known as the George Bridge, this huge structure was once a vital part for wagon travel in the region. Today, you can walk across and snag a great selfie along this historic bridge.

For a real treat, explore the nature trail at the very back of the complex to view Bigfoot’s Art Gallery! Who knew the big fella was so creative. You and the family will have an unforgettable hike with lots of laughs.

This weekend, be sure to add a stop to this free-to-visit nature spot to your itinerary!

The Wood County Arboretum & Botanical Gardens can be found at: 175 Gov Hogg Pkwy, Quitman, TX 75783
