The East Texas Weekend Preview — The year was 1834.

While a looming national revolution was getting ready to explode, a small gathering of Protestant worshippers routinely met up inside the East Texas home of Daniel Parker.

Little did they know, their assembly would be deemed the oldest Baptist church in Texas.

Just a couple of years later, the congregation would find themselves in a new governing body, the Republic of Texas.

As the landscape transformed, so did their place of worship. In 1857 they would construct a building that would serve as a chapel for their group, the Pilgrim Predestinarian Regular Baptist Church.

Here they would praise, preach and enjoy community for generations. Later in 1929, the group would build a new, brick House-of-God, which still stands within the Pilgrim Cemetery.

Today, right beside the brick church, you can visit a replica of what the 1850’s chapel looked like. Step inside this log-style, squared building and imagine the worshipful scenes of ages past.

This historical site is an absolute treasure, honoring the rich state and religious happenings of the region.
