Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility
The East Texas Weekend Preview — Taking flight and studying the cosmos.
Did you know that there is a real NASA facility right here in East Texas!?
Located on the outskirts of Palestine, everyday groups of scientists and engineers are calculating data and making preparations for their massive balloon missions.
Throughout the year, the team launches these floating wonders thousands of feet into the atmosphere to gather information on the mysteries of outer space, such as gamma rays from stars, research on micrometeorite particles and other fascinating studies.
The crew send their balloons way up from a huge, 1000-ft diameter concrete pad. Each inflatable is connected to a very important piece of equipment, like a super sophisticated telescope to view deep into space. The NASA team will even take their balloons around the world for more in-depth missions, to spots like Sweden and Antarctica!
