Jim Hogg’s Legacy & The Great Outdoors

Jim Hogg Park Rusk, TX

The East Texas Weekend Preview — As you explore Texas, you will notice many reoccurring names that are tied to roads, buildings and other entities.

Sam Houston. Stephen F. Austin. Davy Crockett.

Another such figure you may recognize, especially here in East Texas, is that of James (Jim) Stephen Hogg.

Born and raised in the heart of the piney woods, Hogg became the first native-born governor of Texas. His service helped to solidify support for private businesses, law enforcement and the railroad throughout the Lone Star State in the 1880’s. His success was widely celebrated around the region, landing him as a true Texas legend.

Today, you can visit this beautiful nature, historical site tucked into the pines of Rusk, that honors Jim Hogg’s legacy.

At this free-to-visit park, you can admire a stunning replica of the Hogg family home that Jim grew up in. This dog-trot style cabin gives you real sense what what it was liking growing up in the 1800’s. The back of the home also features an old-timey syrup making station, too!

Nearby, guests are encouraged to visit the memorial site for a few of the Hogg family. Here you can pay respects to some of the family members, including Jim’s mother, Lucanda Hogg.

While this park has a huge emphasis on Texas history, it’s also home to tons of outdoor fun!

The grassy areas are filled with lots of great picnic spots, playgrounds that are fit for any age and physical ability and an incredible hiking trail. Along the 1.4mi loop, guests can enjoy the sights and sounds of the well-preserved piney woods while embarking on a nice trek.

If you are looking for a history, nature-filled experience this weekend, this spot is a must-visit!
