The East Texas Weekend Preview — In the heated fury of World War II, many Allied soldiers faced some of the most horrifying situations that called for a incredible level of bravery.

One such man that answered the call was East Texan, Audie Murphy.

On January 26, 1945, Murphy’s company encountered a deadly scenario as Nazi tanks and infantry soared into their stationed area near Holtzwihr, France. In the heat of the battle, stories recall Murphy climbing on top of a burning tank destroyer, picking up a MG-42 machine gun and and driving back the German forces. This moment would win the hearts and boost the moral of the Allied Forces!

Murphy’s heroics during his 400+ days on the front lines would win him every single valor award available by the U.S. military at this time, plus many other honors. Thus, coining him the title of “America’s Most Decorated Soldier.”

Today, you can visit the memorial and museum that keeps his legacy very much alive.
