The East Texas Weekend Preview — In the northern portion of Lake Livingston, where the Caney Creek comes flowing in, there lies a 17-acre island that’s home to a herd of unique residents.
Populated with around 20 fun-loving caprine, this tiny isle has become known as Goat Island to the Trinity, TX community.
The original group of goats were placed here in the 1970’s, by locals Regie Fry and Sonny Johnson. They were supported for decades until a tragedy that led to the entire herd’s demise in 2017. A few years later, a collective of Spanish, Kiko and Superior Juniper goats were introduced to this tiny islet. This group became known as the Harbor Point Goats.
Today, the herd is thriving on the island! While the various breeds that live here are built for the terrain, they also receive incredible care from Goat Island News. They are a local crew of goat-loving supporters that provide vet visits, hay for the wintertime, island clean up and so much more! They are an incredible team with the sole focus of keeping the herd strong for years to come.
These goats are some of the silliest, happiest creatures on Lake Livingston. During our visit we got to get up close and personal with the flock. Lots of head, horn scratches and loud bleats all morning long.

So you’re probably wondering, “I wanna meet the goats! How do I get to this island?”
Well, first you will need a water vessel of some sort, as this is indeed an island.
A few nearby boat launches include the White Rock Creek Public Boat Ramp (12913 TX-94, Trinity, TX 75862) to the north and the Patrick’s Ferry Public Boat Ramp (47091, Point Blank, TX 77364) to the south.
There are many other marinas in the area that have great lake access, but it will most likely cost you something to launch. Take a gander at Google Maps to plan your best course of action.
You can of course ask the Goat Island News crew for suggestions, and they may even offer you a tour!
