The East Texas Weekend Preview — In 1850’s, many communities started to populate all around East Texas. One of which was the tiny township of Concord.
For over a century, the citizens of this settlement enjoy all aspects of life as they cultivated their beloved site.
Yet, in the 1960’s their town, and thousands of nearby acres, would be totally flooded with the creation of the Sam Rayburn Reservoir.
Forced from their homes, locals had to uprooted literally everything and start again elsewhere.
Today, remnants of this East Texas town still exists.

While normally being completely submerged by the waters of Sam Rayburn, in very dry seasons the levels lower enough to reveal pieces of what remains of Concord.
On a tiny peninsula, directly south of the Caney Creek Recreation Area, two staircases and one other rocky structure can be admired.
This exact site is where the Concord Church used to be. It is a fascinating feeling as you walk the sandy beach up to these historic steps. It gives you a real sense of wonder of all the folks that used to frequent this spot over 150yrs ago.
Getting to this spot is quite a fun undertaking, too! It does require a water vessel of some sort. We recommend launching your boat or kayak from the Caney Creek Recreation Area. A great little nature spot, complete with picnic tables, restrooms and campsites! A great destination to complete your weekend adventure of seeking out a real, lost East Texas town.
