The East Texas Weekend Preview — At the turn of the 20th century, a massive brick structure was formed in present day Ratcliff, TX.
Matching the height of the nearby pines, this huge sawmill was constructed by the Louisiana and Texas Lumber Company.
The parent company of this operation was the Central Coal and Coke Company, which led to the name of the 4-C Sawmill.
For almost 20yrs, the plant cut and processed thousands of acres of trees in the area. Families moved to the region to work the mill, leading to a bustling community within this East Texas boomtown. As the operation expanded, the plant became known as the largest sawmill in Texas. And to some, the biggest west of the Mississippi River during its heyday.
With its nonstop production, depletion of local timber became inevitable. Thus, leading to the 4-C Sawmill doors being permanently shut in 1918.
