The East Texas Weekend Preview — While the city of Greenville is known as “the Gateway to East Texas,” downtown there lies a literal arch that served as the entrance to a historically renowned site for sports.
Known as Phillips Field and Majors Stadium, this spot was home to state championship football and a local Minor League baseball team.
In 1929, the site was funded from a generous donation by Eula Lasater Phillips. Here, the local high school had a spot to play football! In just a few years, the Greenville Lions would go undefeated and win a state championship in 1933, led by Coach Henry Frnka.
By 1949, the field was transformed to become the home of a new Minor League baseball team, known as the Greenville Majors. (Named after local World War II soldier, Truett Majors.) Games would be played here throughout the 1950’s and 60’s. During its heyday, the Majors actually defeated a Joe DiMaggio led New York Yankees team during an exhibition match on April 10, 1949. Sadly, by the mid 60’s, the stadium was abandoned due to low attendance and later demolished.
Today, all that is left is the historic front gate of the stadium.

While they may not be playing ball at this spot anymore, a visit to the Major Stadium gate is a must-do for any sport fan, and while enjoying all of the destination in downtown Greenville!
