Coltharp-Beall House
By the mid-1800’s, pioneers began to populate all around the piney woods of East Texas.
One Georgia family that sought to make a new life in the Lone Star State was that of the Coltharp and Beall clan.
On a plot of land in present day Edom, they would construct this one-story home that has stood the test of time. After all of these years it is one of the oldest buildings still in existence throughout all of Van Zandt County.
While serving as a family home, the site of the Coltharp-Beall House became somewhat of a hub for the local community. So much so, this spot was a well known rest stop for traveling stagecoaches along the nearby Dallas-Shreveport Road.
Among these many visitors were travelling preachers that longed to bring revival to East Texas. It’s said that this home was the site of the first sermon preached in the entire community.

Today, the home still stands. Although it rests on private property, you can still enjoy a roadside gaze to the location that many travelers enjoyed for generations.
During out visit, we noticed that there had been quite a bit of construction along FM 279. The historical marker that once stood outside the barbed wire fence couldn’t be located. Hopefully that will turn up soon.
