The Douglass Pavilion
The East Texas Weekend Preview — The El Camino Real de los Tejas is arguably the most important ancient highway to pass through the Lone Star State.
While this pathway was commonly used by Native Americans of prehistoric time periods, the royal road got its name by heavy traffic of Spanish explorers and traders in the late 17th century to the 1800’s.
From Crockett to the outskirts of San Augustine, this “Old San Antonio Road” passes through major portion of the piney woods. Some notable destinations along the path include the Mission Tejas State Park, the Halfway Inn and the Lobanillo Swales.
One tiny, yet significant, point of interest along the historic route is the Douglass Pavilion.
Located just East of Nacogdoches, this small East Texas community had a prominent role in serving the traffic of the El Camino Real.

Today, you can visit the town’s very own collection of history underneath their little, metal roofed site. Read the various historical plaques that tell the stories of the Douglass’ origins, the incredible adventure of French explorer Louis Juchereau De St. Denis and many accounts of the local Caddo tribe.
There are even detailed maps and photographs that focus on all things related to the ancient highway. A real treat for any history buff.
If you’re travels take near Nacogdoches this weekend, be sure to add this little spot to your itinerary!
The Douglass Pavilion can be found at: 15419 W State Hwy 21, Douglass, TX 75943
