Tax free weekend here in Texas is coming up. From August 10 to August 12, you will have the chance to hit the stores and stock up for the school year without paying sales tax. Below are some tips to maximize your shopping.
Know the requirements
Tax free weekend varies from state to state so it’s important to know exactly what is tax free. In Texas, most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 are tax free. For an entire list of qualifying items click here.
Make a list
Go ahead and start making a list now to see if there are things your child will need for the school year. New shoes? New clothes? School supplies? Once you have a list of everything you need, make a list of where you need to go to get everything on your list. Having these two lists will help you get in and out in no time.
Check for coupons
Now that you have a list of everything you need, start searching your favorite stores for coupons. Does your kid love Old Navy shirts? Check their website ahead of time and see if you can print off coupons to save you additional money. The more saved the merrier, right?
Show up early
You’ve heard the phrase, “the early bird gets the worm!” Well in this case, the early shoppers get the supplies. There’s typically fewer crowds in the early morning, so make sure you get your shopping done as close to opening time as possible.
Remember, tax free weekend doesn’t have to be just for back to school shopping. Think ahead. Are there other exempt items you can purchase now that you will need later, like Halloween costumes and holiday items? And it’s not just for kids. If you need shoes, purchase them.
Check your receipt
Pay attention to the register to make sure you’re getting those savings. Before you head to your car, look at the receipt and verify that you weren’t charged sales tax.
