How to make a Lucky Charms milkshake:
It’s St. Patrick’s Day! Sure, you can serve up some corned beef, cabbage and sodabread for your traditional dinner, but what about that American-Irish Saturday morning staple? Lucky Charms!
That’s right, that leprechaun-hocked, novelty-marshmallow-filled, sugar-blasted breakfast cereal has been filling bowels since 1964. While technically a cereal, the actual “cereal” part (hunks of what you could call “a sugared grain of some sort”) isn’t what most people first think of when they think of Lucky Charms. Lucky Charms are all about the marshmallows. What began as four freeze-dried marshmallow shapes has multiplied into what we now get in every box: hearts, shooting stars, moons, horseshoes, balloons, clovers, rainbows and unicorns.
Now we’re going to put the spotlight on both tastes: the bottom-of-the-bowl cereal milk from the grains, and the crunchy, instant-nostalgia of the brightly colored marshmallow bits.
What you’ll need:
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2/3 cup Lucky Charms cereal (no marshmallows)
- 3 cups vanilla ice cream
- green food coloring
- Whipped cream
- additional Lucky Charms marshmallows
- Chop or crush the Lucky Charms cereal into a container, and add the the milk. Allow this to sit at room temperature for about 20 to 30 minutes to steep. Once the milk has steeped then strain the milk through a fine mesh strainer and toss the cereal.
- Add the Lucky Charms marshmallows to a blender, mix until the marshmallows are fine crumbs, add the vanilla ice cream, milk, and green food coloring. If you want some extra sugary punch, throw in some of the marshmallows. Blend until combined and shake like consistency.
- Pour the shake into glasses, top with whipped cream and sprinkle with marshmallows. DRINK UP.
