Spring is just around the corner, and if you want your lawn to be in the best shape now is the time to start getting it ready.
“We want to remind everybody that it’s time to put out preemergent herbicide for those pesky, warm-season annual weeds,” said Randy Reeves, lawn and garden specialist at Jake’s Feed.
What is a warm-season annual weed?
Well, in short, it’s a weed that grows in and prefers the warmer temperatures of spring and summer.
According to a document on the Smith County Agrilife Extension Service’s website the top 7 spring and summer weeds in East Texas include buttonweed, nutsedge, sandbur, bermudagrass, crabgrass, lawn burweed and dollarweed.
And one of the best ways to prevent the growth of these weeds is to apply a preemergent herbicide.
How to apply the preemergent herbicide?
The first step in applying a preemergent herbicide is selecting a product.
Jake’s Feed recommends the turf & ornamental weed & grass stopper by Hi-Yield. If it’s applied on time, this product will prevent the growth of the mentioned weeds before they germinate.
“We suggest that you put [the herbicide] out sometime between the last week of January and no later than February 15th,” said Reeves. “And then you’ll want to apply it again, 8 weeks later, to extend your season into the summer.”
The easiest way to apply the herbicide is by using a fertilizer sprayer.
If you have any questions about the product or application, or any other questions in general, you’re encouraged to contact the team at Jake’s Feed.
