Stepping Inside Canton’s First Monday Trade Days

Shop from dusk to dawn at First Monday Trade Days in Canton.

First Monday Trade Days may be a known event around East Texas, but that doesn’t stop hundreds of thousands of people heading to the city of Canton for 4 days every month. Open from the Thursday to Sunday, before the First Monday of every month, hundreds of vendors set up shop for hundreds of shopping opportunities.

What started more than a century ago as a flea market has become home to some of the most exciting, cutting-edge home furnishings, antiques and collectibles that can be found anywhere. Over the past 150 years, lots of things have changed in the Original First Monday Park; but the genuine, down-home human relationships between vendors and shoppers are the reason people keep coming back.

Here are the remaining 2018 First Monday market days:

  • November 1 – November 4
  • November 29 – December 2

According to folks around the market, the concept of First Monday Trade Days started back in the 1850’s when the circuit judge would travel to Canton on the First Monday of each month. People from all over the county came to the city to attend to their court dealings. Overtime, residents would bring their own goods, whether it be produce, livestock or other original pieces, to sell or trade. Then in 1965, First Monday outgrew the city’s Town Square so it was moved to the present day grounds. And the rest is history…
