Thursday, 5/16

‘The Jungle Book’

The Children’s Performing Arts Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will present two performances of “The Jungle Book” on Thursday, May 16. Join young Mowgli as he learns the “Laws” of the jungle in this time-honored adventure adapted from the book by Rudyard Kipling. This musical version of Kipling’s classic tale presented by Virginia Repertory Theatre will delight both the young and the young at heart. This performance targets children in kindergarten through fifth grade

Kids Night Out: Pool Noodle Mania

There are many things that you can do with pool noodles. Come and explore the creative ways that we use them. Oh yeah! Battling with them is definitely one way to use them!

Pooches on the Patio 

  • When: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Where: The Catch, Tyler
  • Cost: Free to attend (food and drinks not included)

It’ll be a pawsome evening on the patio at The Catch – Tyler! Bring your furry friend and enjoy delicious food & drinks while also helping out animals in need! A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the SPCA of East Texas. The Northeast Public Health District requires that all attending dogs be current on vaccinations and wear a current rabies tag. Also, we ask that all puppies under one year of age in attendance be fully vaccinated. To help ensure all pooches will be on their best behavior, please refrain from bringing your unaltered pets to this event.

Hug a Tree Kiss a Fish

Hug a Tree Kiss A Fish May 17-19, 2019 YMCA Camp Cullen HUG A TREE/KISS A FISH Youth Adventure is a three-day, free nature discovery event and fishing tournament for underprivileged youth and special needs families. The weekend at beautiful YMCA CAMP CULLEN in Trinity, TX will include: fishing, magic show, educational & reptile presentations, crafts, archery, bee-bee shooting range, water-slides, zip lining, swimming, skilled activities and competition, live music, celebrity interaction, bike riding (bring your bikes), celebrity anti-bully panel, a pajama jam, movie after dark, camp sing-a-longs, educational program and more, with and heavy doses of encouragement to improve self-esteem and confidence.

Canton Balloon Fest

  • When: 5 p.m.
  • Where: West Side of First Monday Trade Grounds, Canton
  • Cost: $10 a car

The Tailwind Regional Balloon Fest in Canton, Texas is back for its 8th year in a row, and this year things are going to be bigger and better than ever. They have partnered with the top businesses in the community to bring not only the citizens of Canton but visitors from all across the state a unique experience.

Crystal Ball Red Carpet Gala

For over 18 years, the Crystal Ball has been an important event for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities with over 350 attendees. This year’s gala is a red-carpet affair with a glitzy Hollywood vibe, celebrating and respecting the contributions these very important people add to East Texas communities. Attendees will enjoy a catered dinner, dancing, and entertainment. Special guest is Tyler’s own Kendall Hunter, NFL Running Back, formerly with the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints, along with performances by Artistic Dance Concepts and Cumberland Academy Maidens. The event is open to individuals with special needs and their guests.

Saturday, 5/18

Purse & Rescue

Hundreds of new and used purses will be for sale at the Purse & Rescue event! Held on Saturday, May 18, from 9 am to 2 pm. All proceeds will benefit a group working with ChildHope in Guatemala. Purse & Rescue is hosted by Spring Hill Assembly of God, located at 5115 Gilmer Road in Longview. (Across from Precision Spine & Joint Hospital, between George Richey and Gregg Tex Roads.) Numerous name brands and great prices! Most purses are under $5! We have brands such as Coach, Fossil, Brighton, Michael Kors, Vera Bradley, Jessica Simpson, Kate Landry, Antonio Melani, Dooney, etc. We also have luggage, brief cases, totes, wallets, etc. Included in this sale will be hundreds of pieces of jewelry – at crazy low prices. Don’t miss it!

Autism Awareness Day

  • When: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Where: Tiger Creek Animal Sanctuary, Tyler
  • Cost: Free for those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families

Science Day: Superhero Science

With recent movies like Captain Marvel, Shazam, and the Avengers, superheroes are more popular than ever right now. Now, come learn about the real-world science behind some of your favorite superheroes during our next Science Day! On Saturday, May 18th the Perot Museum will be here performing their popular “Superhero Science” show at 1pm and 3pm. The show includes live science demonstrations, recreating some of the superpowers we see in the comics and movies, and they may need volunteers from the audience to help become a trusty sidekick. Admission to the Superhero Science shows are included for FREE with exhibit admission ($3/person; free for members).

Nac Brewfest 2019

Brewers, wannabe brewers, and homebrew/mead lovers, come join us at our annual celebration of brewer camaraderie and craft! Not only are local brewers represented, but Brew Clubs from Louisiana (River Cities Brew Krewe) and Longview area (East Texas Brewer’s Guild) also participate, so come meet and mingle. Murder at the World’s Fair

Tickets are on sale now for Murder at the World’s Fair. The Murder Mystery dinner will take place on Saturday, May 18 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The fictitious setting has a steampunk theme with Airship Pilots, Gadgeteers and Adventurers. Tickets are $30 per person and may be purchased at the Goodman Museum by debit/credit card, cash, check or money order. Seating is limited and the meal is included with the ticket price. Proceeds from this event will be used to benefit the Goodman Museum Pavilion Fund and donations made are tax deductible.

Bear Bottom Pig Roast

Run for the Wall 

East Texans will have the opportunity to honor veterans and show their support for soldiers during the Gregg County stop-over of Run for the Wall. The mission ride begins in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and culminates with participation in Rolling Thunder’s “Ride for Freedom” on the way to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.The 31st Annual Run For The Wall began in 1989, and now 30-years later is the Largest and Longest Organized Cross-Country Motorcycle Ride and Event of its Kind in the World. It operates three routes: Central, Midway, and Southern Routes. Learn more here.
