Most people in East Texas probably won’t get to travel and experience South Africa. Luckily for us, there’s a restaurant dishing out authentic South African cuisine!
“We didn’t plan this at all,” said owner Jackie Strydom. “Not at all, it just happened.”
Liefie Li Vine opened in May 2012 as a restaurant, originally as a shop in 2011. The restaurant brings the South African feel, with their beautiful artwork adorning the walls, and a patio out back, though there is one change East Texans may enjoy.
“We don’t have central heat and air in South Africa, not much in our houses,” said Strydom. “So we have a patio. When we started (Liefie Li Vine), the patio is the only thing we built really.”
Customers can experience tranquility on the rustic patio, or dine inside (with some central air) while you eat and have some complimentary wine.
“I don’t know of any other restaurant that has complimentary wine,” said Strydom. “When we started off we were a Texas winery, but after two years we were tired of it. We cut that and my husband says ‘Let’s just have a couple glasses of wine, and give customers four choices, four vintages, that we give out complimentary.’”

To truly flesh out the experience, they also have live music on the patio, where you can sip your wine, dive into a wonderful dish, and enjoy the ambience.
In the Fall and Spring, Liefie Li Vine have tea parties, called High Tea. This is where they bring laughter and friendship together with multiple course meals and tea.
They source their ingredients from local farmers’ markets, year round, to ensure the best ingredients.
“We don’t deep fry anything,” said Strydom. “The only oil we use is olive oil. We create all of our own spices, there’s no MSG in anything. We’ve tried to be organic as far as possible. We try to have very healthy options.”
