Heritage Center of Cherokee County
The East Texas Weekend Preview — Each region of East Texas holds treasured stories of the folks who have made this area truly special over the generations.
And Cherokee County is no different!
Located at the heart of downtown Rusk, you will find a wonderful storehouse of history, known as the Heritage Center of Cherokee County.
From the 1800’s to the present, discover all sorts of incredible exhibits that are filled with amazing accounts of citizens and establishments who left their mark on the community.
One display in particular that we were especial drawn to was their spotlight on the local Rusk State Hospital. Inside, you can learn all about what daily life was like during its origin, as well as the staff who had a long-lasting positive impact on its residents.

Towards the back of the museum, you will find an incredible exhibit of local sports. Tons of Rusk High School memorabilia from past students and even some more recent items from athletes who have made their way to the big leagues!
From ancient East Texas and the Native Americans who did life here. To the pioneer era of Texas and the eventual huge positive impact of Governor Jim Hogg. Plus, the beautiful display of local veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Civil War up to current conflicts. The Heritage Center of Cherokee County is extremely robust, and quite detailed, in the local history they have to offer to its visitors.
