Sam Houston Statue
The East Texas Weekend Preview — If you ever made a trip to or from Houston, along I-45, chances are you have witnessed this humongous monument greeting cars as they pass by.
The man portrayed here in none other than Sam Houston, the first president of the Republic of Texas.
This legendary Texan would rise to local fame by leading the Texas Revolution up until their victory at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. In celebration of all his success, cities throughout the territory have honored in a variety of ways over the generations.
By far the coolest, and biggest, memorial in the state is this 67ft statue residing at the Sam Houston Statue Visitors Center & Gift Shop.
Here you can enjoy a relaxing pitstop that features clean restrooms, informative displays of things to do in Huntsville and a tiny walking trail that leads you straight to Big Sam.

Snag a one-of-a-kind selfie with this Texas giant! He is so tall that its like stacking 247 popsicles on top of each other. His huge hands are like lining up 18 starfishes beside each other.
We had an absolute blast during our visit, and we know you and the family will too!
If you want a more historically significant experience, travel little bit up the road to visit Sam Houston’s actual resting place at the Oakwood Cemetery.
During your weekend road trip, make a pitstop at this giant statue of the champion of Texas’ independence.
